Peptitler (Grekçe: πεπτίδια; “küçümencik sindirilebilirler”) tanımlanmış bir düzende, α-amino asitlerin birbirine ilgilanmasıyla oluşan kesik polimerlerdir.[1] Bir amino asit lafıntısı ile öbürü arasındaki bağ bir “amit bağ” yahut peptit bağı olarak bilinir.[1]

Tetrapeptit (Oligopeptit)
Proteinler polipeptit molekülleridir (yahut çok skorda polipeptit madun birimi çitndırır). Kök nüans peptitlerin kesik, polipeptitlerin/proteinlerin ise uzun olmasıdır.[1]

Protein sentezi sırasında her amino asit, öbür amino asite daim, kırılmayan bir polimer olan polipeptid zincirleriyle ilgilanır. Polipeptid dokumasına berklan amino asitlerin her biri dokumaya peptid ilgilarıyla ilgilanır. Peptid bağının oluşumu sırasında amino asitlerden birinin amino grubu ile diğerinin karboksil grubu, aradan bir sutaş çıkması sonucu birleşirler.[1]

Yaklaşık bir polipeptit zinciri 450 amino asitten oluşur.[1] Malum en uzun polipeptit, takribî 27,000 amino asitten oluşan, kas dokusunda kâin “titin”dir. Polipeptid zincirine berklan amino asitlere lafıntı (residue) adı verilir.[1] Zincirin bir ucundaki lafıntı, bağ yapmamış, özgür amino grubu çitndırır ve N ucu olarak adlandırılır. Aynı şekilde zincirin öbür ucundaki özgür α-karboksil grubu olan lafıntıya C ucu adı verilir.
